Overview

If you're not happy with shaving, tweezing, or waxing to remove unwanted hair, laser hair removal may be an option worth considering.

Lasers remove hair by directing light along the hair shaft to damage the follicle. The heat from the laser beam destroys the hair follicle and no more hair can grow from the hair follicle.

Since the laser only affects actively growing hair, repeated treatments are necessary to achieve maximum reduction.

How does laser hair removal work?

Laser hair removal uses light to target the pigment in individual hairs. The light travels down the shaft of the hair and into the hair follicle.

In theory, you may find that permanent laser treatment can lead to permanent hair removal, because  the laser hair removal process will permanently reduce approximately 70-100% of hyperpigmented hair in the treated area.

Is laser hair removal permanent?

Laser hair removal will last for at least two years after all treatments have been completed; however, maintenance sessions may be required to make the area permanently hair-free.  When the hair grows back, the treatment can be done again, so people who want to remove all their hair may need multiple treatments. normally  juste after 2 to 6 laser treatments, most people do not see hair on the treated skin for months or even years.

For some, the effects of laser treatment may even be permanent, but even if your hair grows back, it will be lighter and thinner than ever, requiring only occasional treatments.

How long does laser hair removal last?

Laser hair removal is permanent when the hair follicle is destroyed. When the hair follicle is only damaged, the hair will eventually regrow.Because hair grows in three stages and the laser only works on anagen hair, you can't go through one session and expect complete hair removal.

Regular treatment is usually necessary because hair growth and shedding occur naturally in a cycle, and laser treatment works best on hair follicles that are in the new growth stage. As with everything in life, you will get the best results from your laser treatment if you consistently follow your unique, individualized plan. A few years ago, you might have needed 10 or more sessions and maintenance treatments to fight hair growth, but lasers have come a long way. If you're tired of unwanted hair and tired of endless temporary hair removal methods, it's time to consider laser hair treatment.

Remember that your body needs some time for untreated hair to enter its active growth phase so that it can be effectively treated with the laser.

How long does laser hair removal take?

The amount of time it takes for hair removal depends on your specific condition, but in general, it's a quick treatment.

For example, if you're looking to treat your upper lip hair, you'll probably need about four treatments one week apart, which means you'll see final results in a month. On slow growing areas of hair, such as the back of the head, treatment can be done every 12-16 weeks. The body requires 8 to 10 treatments (maybe up to 12 for darker skin tone) spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart, depending on the part of the body to be treated for long-term hair reduction.

Takeaway

Not all of our hairs are in the same phase at the same time, so laser therapy only works on actively growing hairs. Keep in mind that the treatment only works on follicles that are in the growth phase (aka anagen), and not all hair grows at the same rate. About 30% of hair is in the anagen phase at any given time, so multiple treatments are needed to get results.
