Overview

Shaving is a quick way to get rid of unwanted hair. It is also known to leave areas of irritated and inflamed skin known as razor burns or bumps known as ingrown hairs. It can happen anywhere you shave, from legs to underarms.

With improper preparation for shaving, burns and warts appear, which irritate the lower layer of the skin every time it is shaved.

What are razor burns?

Razor burn is a less serious condition caused by shaving, characterized by mild to moderate redness and irritation at the surface of the skin. This causes red bumps or a rash in areas that have been shaved and usually lasts for several days.

How is it different from razor bumps?

Shave bumps usually appear as a tender red rash after shaving. It leaves behind itchy, painful, puss-filled bumps on the skin as the hair starts to grow back.

Exfoliating

Exfoliating once or twice a week can also prevent razor burn by removing dry skin that can cause irritation after shaving.

Moisturizing

Moisturizing the skin immediately after shaving will effectively minimize any discomfort associated with skin burns or razor irritation. Even if you don't see burns or red pimples after shaving, applying a cool, damp towel can still soothe your skin and make shaving more enjoyable.

How to prevent shaving burns?

Rinsing razor during shaving

Using a razor clogged with hair, soap, or shaving cream can also cause razor burns, so get in the habit of rinsing your shaver frequently during shaving.

Use a shaving cream

For best results, use a shaving cream or softening gel to reduce friction and create a protective barrier between your skin and the shaver. Shaving cream and gel coat hair and improve razor glide over skin, minimizing possible skin irritation.

Shave in showering

It may be tempting to shave dry when you're pressed for time, but you'll greatly reduce the chance of razor burn if you shave in or after showering while your skin and hair are still damp.

Shaving oil

For an all-natural smoothing shave oil, try homemade coconut oil-based shaving cream with peppermint essential oil for a soothing and refreshing post-shave experience. The use of high-quality oils before and after shaving will significantly reduce the trauma of the skin during shaving.

Don’t pull the skin

Never pull or stretch the skin while shaving, and never tear the hair inside the ridge of the razor. Both can lead to the appearance of new irregularities and the deterioration of existing ones.

Takeaway

Ever since a man or woman takes a razor, burns and bumps or pimples after shaving  are common, especially for people with sensitive skin.
