How to stop eye twitching?

Overview

Eye twitching is a spasm or movement of the eye muscles or eyelids that you cannot control. Eye twitching occurs when the small muscles of the eyelid contract uncontrollably, causing involuntary movements of the upper or lower eyelid.

With a slight twitch of the eyes, it can be seen that the whole muscle is not affected, because the movement is not strong enough to fully close the eyelids. The eyelids may be small but still contain muscle.

What causes eye twitching?

Eye fatigue, especially digital eye fatigue from excessive use of computers, tablets, and smartphones, is also a common cause of eyelid twitching. Caffeine, stress, and lack of sleep can increase the chance of eye twitching.

Smoking  also can cause damage to nearly every organ in the body and it increases your risk for a number of diseases, including several eye conditions.

Some experts think that the histamine that is released into your eye tissues when you rub your eyes can actually cause the lid to twitch. Since allergies make your eyes itchy and you rub them, that might be causing your eyelids to twitch as well.

The causes of eye twitching pain are blepharospasm (impaired movement of the muscles around the eye) and hemifacial spasm (spasm caused by facial nerve stimulation).

What are  symptoms of eye twitching?

Eye twitching affects the muscles in the eyelid and causes twitching or involuntary blinking. Mild twitching of the eyelid can feel more noticeable than it actually is — observers are not likely to notice a twitching eyelid in another person.

In more severe cases, the twitching can result in forceful eyelid closure that lasts for seconds, minutes, or even hours. Symptoms may become more noticeable over time.

How can I stop eye twitching?

It can be hard in today’s busy world to get a minimum of eight hours of sleep a night, but your body needs that time to repair itself. Catching up on your rest is the first step to eliminating eye twitches.

Our bodies are not designed to be under the stress most of us experience on a daily basis. Taking breaks during the day, deep breathing exercise, and meditation are just a few of the ways to reduce your stress level and keep an eye twitch from firing up.

Sometimes small changes in diet and lifestyle can greatly reduce the risk of eye twitching or help get rid of eyelid twitching.

Try eye massage to reduce eye fatiguevand counteract the effects of time. which can relax the under eye area and Constrict dilated blood vessels under the skin below your eyes.

Takeaway

For occasional mild twitching, especially if it's only on one side, we usually recommend trying to reduce your caffeine intake, get more sleep, and see if it goes away. If mild eye twitching is bothersome and unrelated to daily habits, your doctor may suggest other treatments to curb or prevent it.
