Overview

Your eyes are complex organs that need many different vitamins and nutrients to function properly.

There are many eye-healthy vitamins in your daily diet and in supplement form that can have a major impact on your vision. There are many vitamins that are good for eye health, so adding certain foods to your diet or taking supplements can really help.

People who wish to keep their eyes healthy should try to include adequate amounts of the following vitamins in their diet. Here are some vitamins you should add to your diet if you want to keep your eyes healthy for longer.

1. Vitamine A

You can use vitamin A to fight all kinds of eye infections and other serious eye conditions, as vitamin A helps to reduce the effect significantly.

Vitamin A protects the surface of the eye, strengthens the immune system and helps improve night vision.

Vitamin A is essential for the formation of the rhodopsin photoreceptor, which is especially helpful for our eyes to be able to see at night and in low light conditions.

2. Vitamine B

B vitamins like B6, B12, and folic acid can help improve eye health by preventing age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a condition in which the retina deteriorates over time, causing blurry vision.

3. Vitamin C

Vitamin C, help fight free radicals that cause eye damage over time caused by poor diet, blue light from computer screens, and exposure to sunlight/ultraviolet light.

Vitamin C forms collagen, a protein that provides structure to your eyes. Observational studies suggest that this vitamin may protect against cataracts and help prevent the progression of AMD.

4. Vitamin E

Vitamin E protect against free radicals that can damage the eyes by 30%. According to the Glaucoma Research Foundation, a healthy diet rich in vitamins A, E, can also fight glaucoma, described as tunnel vision, or loss of vision caused by damage to the optic nerves in the eye.

5. Lutein, Zinc and Zeaxanthin

Lutein is very beneficial for eye health, as it can control inflammation in the eyes and is also an integral part of the collagen production needed to repair any tissue damage in the eye. Zinc plays a key role in eye health as it is needed to transport vitamin A from the liver to the retina to produce melanin, the protective pigment in the eyes. By taking supplements containing lutein and zeaxanthin, as well as other vitamins that promote good eye health, you can actually reduce your chances of developing AMD and potentially save your eyesight.

Takeaway

Just like there are vitamins that address certain issues such as heart health and immune support, vitamins and nutrients can help your eyes function properly.

While you can get enough eye vitamins from a balanced diet, supplements are also recommended for people who are very susceptible to eye damage or have trouble absorbing nutrients normally, such as the elderly, who often have poor digestion.

We need to incorporate some special eye-healthy foods into our daily diet to prevent eye damage from the negative effects of modern digital lifestyles.
