Overview

Itchiness, redness, discomfort: These are all signs of an irritated complexion. The term “irritated skin” isn’t a diagnosis, but rather, a catch-all term to describe visible and physical signs that indicate skin damage. The causes of irritated skin vary, and may include anything from allergies to inflammation brought on by using harsh products on a sensitive complexion. Extreme weather—both hot and cold—can also cause the complexion to become dry, itchy, or red.

Sometimes skin irritation will go away on its own, and sometimes some extra help is needed.

What is itchy skin?

Itchy skin is an uncomfortable, irritating sensation that makes you want to scratch. Also known as pruritus (proo-rie-tus), itchy skin is often caused by dry skin. It's common in older adults, as skin tends to become drier with age.

What causes itchy skin ?

Itchy skin is sometimes caused by taking certain medications, recreational drugs, or herbal supplements. In the elderly, itchy skin can sometimes be a sign of serious medical problems, such as kidney failure, liver disease, blood disease, overactive or inactive thyroid, HIV, advanced cancer, diseases that affect the nervous system, or what I call Mental health issues…

Certain medications, including antibiotics such as amoxicillin, can also cause an itchy rash. In addition, a reaction to certain medications, such as narcotic pain relievers (opioids), can cause itchy skin. Kidney and liver disease, thyroid problems, or iron deficiency can all cause itching throughout the body.

Touching clothing, pets, chemicals, soap, and substances such as poison ivy or cosmetics can cause allergic reactions. Food allergies can also cause itchy skin. When a person comes into contact with jewelry containing even a small amount of nickel, red, uneven, itchy and swollen skin may appear at the point of contact.

Other substances that can cause skin allergic reactions include nail polish, perfume, shampoo, latex and cement.

How is itchy skin diagnosed?

Your doctor will likely examine your skin. In order for a complete skin exam to take place, you may have to undress. If your itching has been severe, you might also have scratch marks or red skin. The doctor might ask also many questions.

What are the symptoms of itchy skin ?

When the skin is itchy, a rash may appear; however, your skin may be severely itchy and nothing can be seen on the skin.

Irritants can cause redness, itching, inflammation, or dry and flaky skin. Scratching can also lead to brown or pale skin spots, bumps, bruises, or scars. Repeated scratching can lead to thick raised areas of skin that can bleed or become infected.

How is itchy skin treated?

  • using a high-quality moisturizing cream on the skin and applying it at least once or twice each day.
  • Skin creams and lotions that moisturize your skin, preventing dryness.
  • These should be applied following a bath or shower, while the skin is still damp.
  • Try to wear loose cotton clothing which can help prevent you overheating and making the itch worse.
  • Avoid fabrics which irritate your skin like wool or scratchy fabrics.
  • Make your shower quick, and don’t use very hot water.
  • avoiding substances that irritate the skin or cause an allergic reaction such as nickel, jewelry, and wool.

Can itchy skin be prevented?

Practicing healthy skincare habits can help prevent pruritus. This includes eating a healthy diet and protecting your skin from excessive damage. Drinking plenty of water, moisturizing to prevent dry skin, using warm (rather than hot) water for washing, and applying adequate sunscreen are also good habits for your skin.

When should I see my doctor?

See your doctor if you are very itchy and there is no rash. It is very important to let them know about the medications/supplements, drugs or herbal medicines you may have taken.

Takeaway

If you are having difficulty falling asleep due to itching, talk to your doctor about safe sleeping pills that can help you. If you have severe poison ivy or a sudden itchy rash, your doctor may prescribe medication for you.

Severe skin itching (chronic itching) that lasts more than six weeks can affect your quality of life. It disrupts sleep, makes it difficult to concentrate, and makes you itch and bleed. It may be difficult to know what is causing the itchy skin. Unfortunately, since irritation is usually the result of multiple factors, it is not always easy to determine the cause of skin changes.
